Herscher High School Homecoming

Here is a photo from the Herscher High School Football game a couple weeks back. I wanted a cool look at the players coming through the football helmet at the start of the varsity game. This shot turned out different than I had imagined, but isn’t that what photography is about?

The original shot I had in mind, was a shot showing off the whole helmet with the team running out. Right before the players decided to run out they started to get “pumped up” as a team, so I moved in with my fisheye, a SB-800 flash on my camera and a SB-800 flash behind the players, to try and get the players jumping up and down. This ended up as my favorite image and was the moment right before the team charged the field.

The second photo is an overall of the field shot using a fisheye.

Yesterday I photographed a beautiful wedding for an awesome couple, Shannon and Dan. It was a beautiful ceremony and reception on Lake Michigan. I couldn’t have asked for a better couple and group of people to work with. Expect some images in the next few days.

A New Season

School has started and with many sporting events for the University and Community College the studio I work at covers, which means I will be shooting more student athletes shooting basketballs, kicking soccer balls, and hitting baseballs, than I will anything else. I don't mind; it is a welcome relief.

I love to shoot sports. I find it is more challenging, yet more satisfying than anything else I have ever shot. Be able to capture the human body at it's purest form is a great feat. There is so much involved in sports photography that it could be considered fine art. Check out photographers like Vince Laforet and Donald Miralle. These guys (who are just a few of the great photographers that I follow) not only strive and succeed at making beautiful images, but they make it look easy.

Looking at photos that these guys have made really inspired me to want to continue in photography and push myself to continually making good photographs. There is not better feeling when you come back from the game and you have good photos.

A truly great photograph captures the essence of the sport, athlete, and unbelievable skill, yet makes you believe it is a fine art print. I am in the early stages of my photographic career and have a lot to learn and have 100% room for improvement. Someday I hope to be shooting along side my heros like, Vince Laforet, Donald Miralle, and Robert Hanashiro, yet I know it will take years of hardwork and dedication.

Here are two of my photos I shot at my second soccer game of the year for the Olivet Nazarene University's Women's Soccer team. There wasn't much that happened. Between the hour long lighting delay. I only really had the chance to shoot one half. (So there was no jubilation to shoot, infact at the point that I left the opposing team was up by one.) So all I was able to get was pretty straightforward stuff. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks for looking...

It looks like blogging has gotten the best of me. I never really thought I would blog, but after my friend Jake (who you should check out at www.jakemoreland.blogspot.com) started one, it seemed like a good way to get my work out there. I will try and post at least a photo or two a week and maybe write some insight into the photos, photography, or even life, which in itself should be funny enough to make it worth coming back to so see what I have to say. So with that....

Today I started to take some more portraits for my Senior Photography show (more to come later). The people in the photos is Jake Moreland (www.jakemoreland.blogspot.com) and Jon Brown. I wanted them to do what ever they felt like and I liked what came from it. I want the portraits to be simple and straightforward, while bringing out the subjects personality and showing us how different each one of us really can be, from looks to personality.
